Q/ Do I need a large tree for my tree house?
A/ No, a large tree is not required, but if you do have one, fantastic.
A tree house can be built between a number of trees, or extra supports can
be added if you don't have trees capable of supporting the tree house unaided.
Q/ Is the tree damaged during the construction of a tree house?
A/ No, special brackets and limbs are attached to the tree to support the
tree house, which do not harm the tree and which allow movement for both
the tree and the tree house. Trees can withstand carefully placed nails
and bolts that do not block the flow of nutrients up the trunk.
Q/ What kind of materials are used for the construction of a tree house?
A/ The bulk of a tree house is normally made from wood. Reclaimed materials
can be used, such as wood, windows, doors and roofing materials, which can
add to the story and character of the tree house. We like to use locally-provided
materials where possible.
Q/ What is the ideal tree for a tree house?
A/ Any strong healthy tree is a good host. Some of the best are oak, beech,
chestnut, ash, lime, cedar and even large fruit trees.
Q/ How much does a tree house cost?
A/ Although it is impossible to say how much your tree house will cost,
our prices start at about £10,000.
Q/ Is planning permission needed?
A/ It will depend on the design, size, location, height and intended use
of your tree house. We can offer guidance regarding planning issues.
Q/ Do you have set designs?
A/ As every tree is different, we design and build the tree house around
the shape of the tree or trees. This is one of the beauties of tree houses
- each one unfolds organically, depending on the tree. Obviously, your ideas
are an intrinsic part of the design process.
Q/ What's the next step?
A/ The next thing to do would be to contact us, and we will arrange an on-site
consultation in order to look at the possibilities and discuss your ideas
and plans. The fee for this is £100. We would then prepare a set of plans,
the fee for which is £500. If you decide to go ahead with the project we
will require a deposit of 40% of the total price. A further 40% is payable
halfway through the project with the final 20% payable upon completion.
Obviously there will be a certain amount of flexibility within the project. If this entails any further expense, we will re-quote before going ahead with any additional work.
If your tree house is to be outside Europe, travel expenses will be applicable. Contact us for details.
